M-POD: Safety from any direction.

The M-POD is an upgrade from your standard roadside post breakaway system. The new proprietary breakaway device has been designed with emphasis on providing roadside safety for drivers and their passengers, especially in areas with high traffic volume.

The slip base mounting system, similar in design to the slip base used by many states throughout the country for years, allows a post to separate from the base when struck by a vehicle - from any direction. This omnidirectional functionality means the M-POD provides advanced roadside safety for every vehicle on the road, not just the ones going the right way. And in situations where vehicles are traveling in multiple directions within a small space, the M-POD could potentially be a life-saving device.

Some locations, such as near intersections, are sites that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Roadway Departure Safety Program has recommended using omnidirectional breakaway devices, and the upcoming edition of AASHTO's Roadside Design Guide, tentatively scheduled for a Summer 2011 release, will emphasize "the need for omni-directional supports in various locations" along our highway systems.

Many large intersections have wide flange posts holding up signs: Turn right for Roanoke, keep straight for Sheboygan, head left for Los Alamos. And these intersections have vehicles traveling in at least four different directions. Sign structures in these locations should be omnidirectional if they're in the clear zone and not separated by a roadside barrier. Why? With your old-style bidirectional breakaway, only two directions of traffic are covered. With the M-POD, everybody is.
